In which currency do we need to pay on our gulet cruise?

In general, your payment will be done in the currency of the country you will cruise in.

It really depends on which country you are cruising in and the gulet. Every country uses its own currency and also gulets are using their home currency in which they are registered. But some gulet owners are more easily with that and can also accept other currencies. But that is not a rule, more an exception. So first ask your sales representative if you have some special wishes.

  • Croatia’s national currency is Euro. In July 2013 they became a full member of the European Union and from January 2023 became a Schengen and Eurozone member.

Croatia also has a large number of ATM’s. You can find them all over the country. But beware of the provisions for withdrawals, they can vary. A better option if you don’t need cash is to pay in restaurants, shops, bars, etc. with payment cards. Almost all take cards (credit, cash/bank card,…) you won’t have a problem with paying. It’s a cheaper and no hustle option. And you won’t have a problem dealing with payment currency on a gulet cruise. If you need cash a better option for withdrawal is in ATM of their national banks.

In regard to the extra payments that need to be paid on spot (food, beverages, port taxes) in large cases the preferred option is in cash and in EUR. Only for tips the preferred option is in national currency. But also it’s your choice.

  • In Turkey, things are more freely. Their national currency is Turkish LIRA. Turkish people are famous for being very business-oriented and will take any option of payment. But on cruising gulets the preferred payment currency is EUR.

You can find ATMs in all large cities but keep in mind if you are cruising to some remote islands that the ATMs will be hard to find. But in Turkey, all you need is on your gulet so, in reality, you don’t need a lot of cash.

  • Greece is very similar to Turkey in regard to how much money you need. The only difference is that they use the EURO as their national currency. Also, ATM’s are very easy to find. Greece is very touristic and in that regard very easy to travel.
